BLIA is a non-governmental organization, association of library and information professionals which was founded in 1990 as ULISO. At present there are more than 1000 individual members and about 80 institutional members. The structure of the BLIA consists of 13 regional divisions, Section of Sociology and Section of School libraries, Alumni organizations etc. Since 2001 BLIA has been managing Center for Continuing Education of Librarians.
The main goals of BLIA are: to participate in the development of national library policy as a part of the comprehensive cultural and information policy; to enhance the social status and provide professional protection of library and information specialists; to lobby for libraries and their new role in cultural, educational and social sector; to promote and cooperate for the implementation of new technologies for preservation and access to cultural heritage in library collections; to guarantee universal access to information; to develop a system of continuing education; to develop collaboration and cooperation with similar organizations in Bulgaria and abroad; to develop national and regional projects for libraries and to participate in European and international ones.
Among the main BLIA activities are: National Library Week; National Marathon of Reading; annual national conferences; national and regional training seminars and workshops, etc. BLIA is a key partner in the most recent library project “Global Libraries – Bulgaria”, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
