National and University Library of Slovenia (NUK) carries out the tasks of both the Slovenian National Library and Ljubljana University Library, and provides at the same time advisory and supervisory services to the national library network. The 'Centre for Library Development', among other tasks, coordinates the public library network, acts as an advisory service and initiates projects which stimulate development of new services and activities in public libraries. NUK has been involved in many national and international projects, such as CALIMERA, TEL-ME-MOR, ReUSE, Web Cultural Heritage and others.

Slovene public libraries are active centres of informal learning. They have a good cooperation with local schools and organise digital literacy training for the general public as well as special groups of users (children, seniors etc). In co-operation with adult education institutions many of them have established open learning centres. They have been partners in projects PuLLS, TUNE and AITMES, all focused on the role of public libraries in a learning society. They present models and new approaches once a year through ‘Best Practice Days'.
